Eastmont vs Moses Lake Football Preview: League Title on the Line in Heavyweight Clash

The entire regular season has been building toward this moment. On Friday, October 23 at 7:00 p.m., the Friday night lights will shine down on Lions Field for the defining matchup of the year in the Big 9.

This Eastmont vs Moses Lake football clash is essentially for all the marbles (assuming both teams win the following week): the undisputed Big 9 League Championship. Both programs enter the game riding massive waves of momentum, featuring high-powered offenses and stout, physical defenses.

Eastmont: Battle-Tested and Undefeated

The Eastmont Wildcats roll into Moses Lake with a pristine, undefeated record. Head Coach Rory Rosenbach’s squad has consistently proven they know how to win in the clutch, overcoming adversity and executing when the pressure is highest.

That poise was on full display last Friday when the Wildcats successfully defended their home turf, taking down their archrival, the Wenatchee Panthers, in the highly anticipated “Battle of the Bridges.” Eastmont showcased their physical, grind-it-out mentality, utilizing their deep roster to secure the victory.

One of the highlights of the night came on a beautifully executed play design between brothers. Senior quarterback Peyton Zelinski hit his brother, the shifty junior fullback Austin Zelinski, on a perfectly timed swing pass. Austin hauled it in, lowered his shoulder, and powered through the defense for an incredible 22-yard touchdown that sent the Wildcats sideline into a frenzy.

With workhorse running back Javin Britton establishing the ground game, and playmakers like Conley McGinnis and Donivon Torres anchoring the defense, Eastmont is a complete, well-oiled machine ready for a championship fight.

Moses Lake: An Absolute Offensive Juggernaut

Standing in their way is a Moses Lake Mavericks program that is playing truly historic football. Head Coach Kyler Haneberg has unleashed an absolute offensive juggernaut, and the Mavericks look like a legitimate threat to make a deep run into the state playoffs.

Moses Lake enters the championship game fresh off a blistering road victory over the Sunnyside Grizzlies. Calling their offense “explosive” feels like an understatement—the Mavericks erupted for an unbelievable 42 points in the first quarter alone.

Junior quarterback Nolan Decubber was surgical, torching the Sunnyside secondary for four touchdown passes. Defenses across the region have struggled to find any answers for the Moses Lake passing attack, and when teams drop back to defend the pass, they are punished by senior running back Elijah Burns, who is in the midst of a record-breaking season (he set the school record for rushing yards in a game with 309 against Wenatchee).

On the other side of the ball, the Mavericks’ defense, spearheaded by reigning Defensive Player of the Year John Rainey (who ran an interception back for a touchdown last week), has routinely suffocated opposing offenses, creating short fields for Decubber and company to exploit.

The Ultimate Friday Night Showdown

This game will be decided in the trenches. Can Donivon Torres and the Eastmont defensive front disrupt Decubber’s rhythm and contain the explosive playmaking of Elijah Burns? Conversely, can the Mavericks’ defense handle the quick, explosive running style of the Wildcats’ backfield duo of Javin Britton and Austin Zelinski?

When the top two teams in the Big 9 collide with the league title on the line, expect a playoff-level atmosphere and an unforgettable four quarters of football.
