Moses Lake vs Wenatchee Football Preview: Undefeated Panthers Host High-Flying Mavericks in Big 9 Opener

One of the marquee matchups of the fall has arrived in the valley. On Friday, September 25 at 7:00 p.m., the Apple Bowl lights will illuminate one of the most anticipated regular-season games in a while as Moses Lake vs Wenatchee football headlines this week of Big 9 league play.

Both programs enter Friday night riding waves of tremendous momentum, boasting high-octane offenses, suffocating defensive play, and championship aspirations. For Wenatchee, it represents a chance to validate an undefeated non-league gauntlet against the defending league champions. For Moses Lake, it is an opportunity to prove their reloaded roster remains the undisputed standard in 4A Central Washington.

The Mavericks Reload: New Leadership, Same Explosive Firepower

Moses Lake is coming off a historic, school-record 11-win campaign that carried them all the way to the 4A state quarterfinals. While former Big 9 Coach of the Year Brett Jay and his son, record-setting quarterback Brady Jay have moved on, the Mavericks’ engine hasn’t skipped a beat under first-year head coach Kyler Haneberg.

Haneberg, a 2018 Moses Lake graduate and former First-Team All-Conference wide receiver, spent the last seven seasons on staff as receivers coach and offensive coordinator. That continuity was on full display last week in a breathtaking 57-7 demolition of the West Valley Rams.

Stepping into the pocket is junior quarterback Nolan Decubber (6’0”, 175 lbs.), who made an emphatic statement against West Valley by tossing six touchdown passes. Decubber operates behind a bruising offensive line anchored by First-Team All-Conference returner Reese Porter, a team Captain.

Surrounding him is elite playmaking talent led by senior Elijah Burns, a first-team all-purpose selection who racked up over 1,500 yards from scrimmage and 14 touchdowns a season ago. On defense, the Mavericks are spearheaded by junior linebacker John Rainey (the reigning Big 9 Defensive Player of the Year as a sophomore), alongside defensive standouts Petrah MacKenzie and Taggart Rathbun.

Moses Lake’s lone defeat this season came at the hands of the #1-ranked team in Idaho, making this battle-tested squad as dangerous as ever.

Wenatchee’s Perfect Start: Stout Defense and Aerial Fireworks

The Panthers enter their league opener with an unblemished 3-0 record, with a clean sweep through their non-league schedule. Wenatchee opened the year traveling south to California, where they shut out Linfield Christian 10-0 on their home turf, before taking down two tough Westside programs in Lake Washington (27-12) and South Kitsap (34-7), doing Central Washington proud.

The foundation of Wenatchee’s early success has been an elite, disciplined defense that is surrendering an absurd 6.3 points per game. The Panthers front seven lived in the backfield against South Kitsap, creating game-changing takeaways including a strip-sack scoop-and-score and a blocked punt.

On the other side of the ball, senior quarterback Rigo Garcia is playing great. Garcia has distributed the ball with pinpoint accuracy, orchestrating an aerial assault that rarely lets a pass hit the turf. In receivers Chase Ballew, Micah Knell, and Griffin Butler, Garcia commands the most dynamic pass-catching trio in the region. Each possesses big-play capability, stretching secondaries horizontally and vertically while forcing defenses to defend every blade of grass.

What to Watch Under the Apple Bowl Lights

This contest presents a classic, heavyweight showdown: can Wenatchee’s lockdown defense contain Decubber and Burns in space? And can Moses Lake’s physical front seven slow down Garcia and his explosive receiver corps?

With conference supremacy, local bragging rights, and crucial postseason seeding implications immediately on the line, expect a playoff-level atmosphere when these two proud programs collide on Friday night.
